The rocky ledge runs far into the seaA
And on its outer point some miles awayB
The Lighthouse lifts its massive masonryA
A pillar of fire by night of cloud by dayB
-
Even at this distance I can see the tidesC
Upheaving break unheard along its baseD
A speechless wrath that rises and subsidesC
In the white lip and tremor of the faceD
-
And as the evening darkens lo how brightE
Through the deep purple of the twilight airF
Beams forth the sudden radiance of its lightE
With strange unearthly splendor in the glareF
-
Not one alone from each projecting capeG
And perilous reef along the ocean's vergeH
Starts into life a dim gigantic shapeG
Holding its lantern o'er the restless surgeH
-
Like the great giant Christopher it standsI
Upon the brink of the tempestuous waveJ
Wading far out among the rocks and sandsI
The night o'ertaken mariner to saveJ
-
And the great ships sail outward and returnK
Bending and bowing o'er the billowy swellsL
And ever joyful as they see it burnK
They wave their silent welcomes and farewellsL
-
They come forth from the darkness and their sailsM
Gleam for a moment only in the blazeN
And eager faces as the light unveilsM
Gaze at the tower and vanish while they gazeN
-
The mariner remembers when a childO
On his first voyage he saw it fade and sinkP
And when returning from adventures wildO
He saw it rise again o'er ocean's brinkP
-
Steadfast serene immovable the sameQ
Year after year through all the silent nightE
Burns on forevermore that quenchless flameQ
Shines on that inextinguishable lightE
-
It sees the ocean to its bosom claspR
The rocks and sea sand with the kiss of peaceS
It sees the wild winds lift it in their graspR
And hold it up and shake it like a fleeceS
-
The startled waves leap over it the stormT
Smites it with all the scourges of the rainU
And steadily against its solid formT
Press the great shoulders of the hurricaneU
-
The sea bird wheeling round it with the dinV
Of wings and winds and solitary criesW
Blinded and maddened by the light withinV
Dashes himself against the glare and diesW
-
A new Prometheus chained upon the rockX
Still grasping in his hand the fire of JoveJ
It does not hear the cry nor heed the shockX
But hails the mariner with words of loveJ
-
'Sail on ' it says 'sail on ye stately shipsY
And with your floating bridge the ocean spanZ
Be mine to guard this light from all eclipseY
Be yours to bring man nearer unto man '-
