On sunny slope and beechen swellA
The shadowed light of evening fellA
And where the maple's leaf was brownB
With soft and silent lapse came downB
The glory that the wood receivesC
At sunset in its golden leavesC
-
Far upward in the mellow lightD
Rose the blue hills One cloud of whiteD
Around a far uplifted coneE
In the warm blush of evening shoneE
An image of the silver lakesF
By which the Indian's soul awakesF
-
But soon a funeral hymn was heardG
Where the soft breath of evening stirredG
The tall gray forest and a bandH
Of stern in heart and strong in handH
Came winding down beside the waveI
To lay the red chief in his graveI
-
They sang that by his native bowersF
He stood in the last moon of flowersF
And thirty snows had not yet shedJ
Their glory on the warrior's headJ
But as the summer fruit decaysF
So died he in those naked daysF
-
A dark cloak of the roebuck's skinK
Covered the warrior and withinK
Its heavy folds the weapons madeL
For the hard toils of war were laidL
The cuirass woven of plaited reedsF
And the broad belt of shells and beadsF
-
Before a dark haired virgin trainM
Chanted the death dirge of the slainM
Behind the long procession cameN
Of hoary men and chiefs of fameN
With heavy hearts and eyes of griefO
Leading the war horse of their chiefO
-
Stripped of his proud and martial dressF
Uncurbed unreined and riderlessF
With darting eye and nostril spreadJ
And heavy and impatient treadJ
He came and oft that eye so proudP
Asked for his rider in the crowdP
-
They buried the dark chief they freedQ
Beside the grave his battle steedQ
And swift an arrow cleaved its wayR
To his stern heart One piercing neighO
Arose and on the dead man's plainM
The rider grasps his steed againS
