I have read in some old marvellous taleA
Some legend strange and vagueB
That a midnight host of spectres paleA
Beleaguered the walls of PragueC
-
Beside the Moldau's rushing streamD
With the wan moon overheadE
There stood as in an awful dreamD
The army of the deadE
-
White as a sea fog landward boundF
The spectral camp was seenG
And with a sorrowful deep soundF
The river flowed betweenG
-
No other voice nor sound was thereH
No drum nor sentry's paceI
The mist like banners clasped the airH
As clouds with clouds embraceI
-
But when the old cathedral bellJ
Proclaimed the morning prayerH
The white pavilions rose and fellJ
On the alarmed airH
-
Down the broad valley fast and farK
The troubled army fledE
Up rose the glorious morning starK
The ghastly host was deadE
-
I have read in the marvellous heart of manL
That strange and mystic scrollM
That an army of phantoms vast and wanN
Beleaguer the human soulM
-
Encamped beside Life's rushing streamD
In Fancy's misty lightO
Gigantic shapes and shadows gleamD
Portentous through the nightO
-
Upon its midnight battle groundF
The spectral camp is seenG
And with a sorrowful deep soundF
Flows the River of Life betweenG
-
No other voice nor sound is thereH
In the army of the graveP
No other challenge breaks the airH
But the rushing of Life's waveP
-
And when the solemn and deep churchbellM
Entreats the soul to prayQ
The midnight phantoms feel the spellM
The shadows sweep awayQ
-
Down the broad Vale of Tears afarK
The spectral camp is fledE
Faith shineth as a morning starK
Our ghastly fears are deadE
