Round Autumn's mouldering urnA
Loud mourns the chill and cheerless galeB
When nightfall shades the quiet valeB
And stars in beauty burnA
-
'Tis the year's eventideC
The wind like one that sighs in painD
O er joys that ne'er will bloom againE
Mourns on the far hillsideC
-
And yet my pensive eyeF
Rests on the faint blue mountain longG
And for the fairy land of songG
That lies beyond I sighF
-
The moon unveils her browH
In the mid sky her urn glows brightC
And in her sad and mellowing lightC
The valley sleeps belowI
-
Upon the hazel grayJ
The lyre of Autumn hangs unstrungG
And o er its tremulous chords are flungG
The fringes of decayG
-
I stand deep musing hereK
Beneath the dark and motionless beechL
Whilst wandering winds of nightfall reachL
My melancholy earK
-
The air breathes chill and freeM
A spirit in soft music callsN
From Autumn's gray and moss grown hallsN
And round her withered treeM
-
The hoar and mantled oakG
With moss and twisted ivy brownO
Bends in its lifeless beauty downO
Where weeds the fountain chokeG
-
That fountain's hollow voiceP
Echoes the sound of precious thingsQ
Of early feeling's tuneful springsQ
Choked with our blighted joysR
-
Leaves that the night wind bearsS
To earth's cold bosom with a signT
Are types of our mortalityM
And of our fading yearsU
-
The tree that shades the plainD
Wasting and hoar as time decaysV
Spring shall renew with cheerful daysV
But not my joys againE
