The Red Flower Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDB EFGFHI JKLKMK DNONPN QRSRTR UIVIBI

In the pleasant time of PentecostA
By the little river KyllB
I followed the angler's winding pathC
Or waded the stream at willB
And the friendly fertile German landD
Lay round me green and stillB
-
But all day long on the eastern bankE
Of the river cool and clearF
Where the curving track of the double railsG
Was hardly seen though nearF
The endless trains of German troopsH
Went rolling down to TrierI
-
They packed the windows with bullet headsJ
And caps of hodden grayK
They laughed and sang and shouted loudL
When the trains were brought to a stayK
They waved their hands and sang againM
As they went on their iron wayK
-
No shadow fell on the smiling landD
No cloud arose in the skyN
I could hear the river's quiet tuneO
When the trains had rattled byN
But my heart sank low with a heavy senseP
Of trouble I knew not whyN
-
Then came I into a certain fieldQ
Where the devil's paint brush spreadR
'Mid the gray and green of the rolling hillsS
A flaring splotch of redR
An evil omen a bloody signT
And a token of many deadR
-
I saw in a vision the field gray hordeU
Break forth at the devil's hourI
And trample the earth into crimson mudV
In the rage of the Will to PowerI
All this I dreamed in the valley of KyllB
At the sign of the blood red flowerI
