The Oxford Thrushes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDD EEFF GGHH IIJJ KKLL MMNN OOPQ DDRR

FEBRUARYA
-
I never thought again to hearB
The Oxford thrushes singing clearC
Amid the February rainD
Their sweet indomitable strainD
-
A wintry vapor lightly spreadsE
Among the trees and round the bedsE
Where daffodil and jonquil sleepF
Only the snowdrop wakes to weepF
-
It is not springtime yet AlasG
What dark tempestuous days must passG
Till England's trial by battle ceaseH
And summer comes again with peaceH
-
The lofty halls the tranquil towersI
Where Learning in untroubled hoursI
Held her high court serene in fameJ
Are lovely still yet not the sameJ
-
The novices in fluttering gownK
No longer fill the ancient townK
But fighting men in khaki drestL
And in the Schools the wounded restL
-
Ah far away 'neath stranger skiesM
Full many a son of Oxford liesM
And whispers from his warrior graveN
I died to keep the faith you gaveN
-
The mother mourns but does not failO
Her courage and her love prevailO
O'er sorrow and her spirit hearsP
The promise of triumphant yearsQ
-
Then sing ye thrushes in the rainD
Your sweet indomitable strainD
Ye bring a word from God on highR
And voices in our hearts replyR
