The glory of ships is an old old songA
since the days when the sea rovers ranB
In their open boats through the roaring surfC
and the spread of the world beganB
The glory of ships is a light on the seaD
and a star in the story of manB
-
When Homer sang of the galleys of GreeceE
that conquered the Trojan shoreF
And Solomon lauded the barks of Tyre thatG
brought great wealth to his doorF
'Twas little they knew those ancient menH
what would come of the sail and the oarF
-
The Greek ships rescued the West from the EastI
when they harried the Persians homeJ
And the Roman ships were the wings of strengthK
that bore up the empire RomeJ
And the ships of Spain found a wide new worldL
far over the fields of foamJ
-
Then the tribes of courage at last saw clearM
that the ocean was not a boundN
But a broad highway and a challenge to seekO
for treasure as yet unfoundN
So the fearless ships fared forth to the searchP
in joy that the globe was roundN
-
Their hulls were heightened their sails spread outN
they grew with the growth of their questN
They opened the secret doors of the EastN
and the golden gates of the WestN
And many a city of high renownQ
was proud of a ship on its crestN
-
The fleets of England and Holland and FranceR
were at strife with each other and SpainS
And battle and storm sent a myriad shipsT
to sleep in the depths of the mainS
But the seafaring spirit could never be drownedN
and it filled up the fleets againH
-
They greatened and grew with the aid of steamU
to a wonderful vast arrayV
That carries the thoughts and the traffic of menH
into every harbor and bayV
And now in the world wide work of the shipsT
'tis England that leads the wayV
-
O well for the leading that follows the lawW
of a common right on the seaD
But ill for the leader who tries to holdN
what belongs to mankind in feeD
The way of the ships is an open wayV
and the ocean must ever be freeD
-
Remember O first of the maritime folkX
how the rise of your greatness beganB
It will live if you safeguard the round the world roadN
from the shame of a selfish banB
For the glory of ships is a light on the seaD
and a star in the story of manB
