I would not even ask my heart to sayA
If I could love some other land as wellB
As thee my country had I felt the spellB
Of Italy at birth or learned to obeyA
The charm of France or England's mighty swayA
I would not be so much an infidelB
As once to dream or fashion words to tellB
What land could hold my love from thee awayA
-
For like a law of nature in my bloodC
I feel thy sweet and secret sovereigntyD
And woven through my soul thy vital signE
My life is but a wave and thou the floodC
I am a leaf and thou the mother treeD
Nor should I be at all were I not thineE
