Mare Liberum Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCB DEDEFFE GHIHBBH JKJKLLK

You dare to say with perjured lipsA
We fight to make the ocean freeB
You whose black trail of butchered shipsA
Bestrews the bed of every seaB
Where German submarines have wroughtC
Their horrors Have you never thoughtC
What you call freedom men call piracyB
-
Unnumbered ghosts that haunt the waveD
Where you have murdered cry you downE
And seamen whom you would not saveD
Weave now in weed grown depths a crownE
Of shame for your imperious headF
A dark memorial of the deadF
Women and children whom you left to drownE
-
Nay not till thieves are set to guardG
The gold and corsairs called to keepH
O'er peaceful commerce watch and wardI
And wolves to herd the helpless sheepH
Shall men and women look to theeB
Thou ruthless Old Man of the SeaB
To safeguard law and freedom on the deepH
-
In nobler breeds we put our trustJ
The nations in whose sacred loreK
The Ought stands out above the MustJ
And Honor rules in peace and warK
With these we hold in soul and heartL
With these we choose our lot and partL
Till Liberty is safe on sea and shoreK
