Ah who will tell me in these leaden daysB
Why the sweet Spring delaysB
And where she hides the dear desireC
Of every heart that longsD
For bloom and fragrance and the ruby fireC
Of maple buds along the misty hillsE
And that immortal call which fillsE
The waiting wood with songsD
The snow drops came so long agoF
It seemed that Spring was nearG
But then returned the snowF
With biting winds and all the earth grew sereG
And sullen clouds drooped lowF
To veil the sadness of a hope deferredH
Then rain rain rain incessant rainI
Beat on the window paneI
Through which I watched the solitary birdH
That braved the tempest buffeted and tossedJ
With rumpled feathers down the wind againK
Oh were the seeds all lostJ
When winter laid the wild flowers in their tombL
I searched their haunts in vainI
For blue hepaticas and trilliums whiteM
And trailing arbutus the Spring's delightM
Starring the withered leaves with rosy bloomL
The woods were bare and every night the frostJ
To all my longings spoke a silent nayN
And told me Spring was far and far awayN
Even the robins were too cold to singO
Except a broken and discouraged noteP
Only the tuneful sparrow on whose throatP
Music has put her triple finger printQ
Lifted his head and sang my heart a hintQ
Wait wait wait oh wait a while for SpringO

But now Carina what divine amendsR
For all delay What sweetness treasured upS
What wine of joy that blendsR
A hundred flavours in a single cupS
Is poured into this perfect dayN
For look sweet heart here are the early flowersT
That lingered on their wayN
Thronging in haste to kiss the feet of MayN
And mingled with the bloom of later hoursT
Anemonies and cinque foils violets blueU
And white and iris richly gleaming throughU
The grasses of the meadow and a blazeB
Of butter cups and daisies in the fieldV
Filling the air with praiseB
As if a silver chime of bells had pealedV
The frozen songs within the breastV
Of silent birds that hid in leafless woodsW
Melt into rippling floodsX
Of gladness unrepressedV
Now oriole and blue bird thrush and larkY
Warbler and wren and vireoU
Confuse their music for the living sparkY
Of Love has touched the fuel of desireU
And every heart leaps up in singing fireU
It seems as if the landV
Were breathing deep beneath the sun's caressZ
Trembling with tendernessA2
While all the woods expandV
In shimmering clouds of rose and gold and greenB2
To veil the joys too sacred to be seenB2

Come put your hand in mineC2
True love long sought and found at lastV
And lead me deep into the Spring divineC2
That makes amends for all the wintry pastV
For all the flowers and songs I feared to missD2
Arrive with youU
And in the lingering pressure of your kissD2
My dreams come trueU
And in the promise of your generous eyesE2
I read the mystic signC2
Of joy more perfect madeV
Because so long delayedV
And bliss enhanced by rapture of surpriseE2
Ah think not early love alone is strongF2
He loveth best whose heart has learned to waitV
Dear messenger of Spring that tarried longF2
You're doubly dear because you come so lateV
