spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts | B |
for the blue ocean She is an object of beauty and strength | C |
I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck | D |
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other | E |

Then someone at my side says 'There she is gone' | F |

Gone from my sight That is all She is just as large in mast | H |
hull and spar as she was when she left my side | A |
And she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port | I |

Her diminished size is in me not in her | E |

there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices | J |

Rita Altland : My brother passed at 55 years old. I had the minister read this poem at his funeral. It has been 17 years and I still cry when I read this poem.
