IA
-
Thou who hast made thy dwelling fairB
With flowers beneath above with starry lightsC
And set thine altars everywhereB
On mountain heightsC
In woodlands dim with many a dreamD
In valleys bright with springsE
And on the curving capes of every streamD
Thou who hast taken to thyself the wingsE
Of morning to abideF
Upon the secret places of the seaG
And on far islands where the tideF
Visits the beauty of untrodden shoresH
Waiting for worshippers to come to theeG
In thy great out of doorsH
To thee I turn to thee I make my prayerB
God of the open airB

Seeking for thee the heart of manI
Lonely and longing ranI
In that first solitary hourJ
When the mysterious powerJ
To know and love the wonder of the mornK
Was breathed within him and his soul was bornK
And thou didst meet thy childL
Not in some hidden shrineM
But in the freedom of the garden wildL
And take his hand in thineM
There all day long in Paradise he walkedN
And in the cool of evening with thee talkedN

Lost long ago that garden bright and pureO
Lost that calm day too perfect to endureO
And lost the childlike love that worshipped and was sureO
For men have dulled their eyes with sinP
And dimmed the light of heaven with doubtQ
And built their temple walls to shut thee inP
And framed their iron creeds to shut thee outQ
But not for thee the closing of the doorR
O Spirit unconfinedS
Thy ways are freeG
As is the wandering windS
And thou hast wooed thy children to restoreR
Their fellowship with theeG
In peace of soul and simpleness of mindS

-
Joyful the heart that when the flood rolled byA
Leaped up to see the rainbow in the skyA
And glad the pilgrim in the lonely nightT
For whom the hills of Haran tier on tierU
Built up a secret stairway to the heightT
Where stars like angel eyes were shining clearV
From mountain peaks in many a land and ageW
Disciples of the Persian seerU
Have hailed the rising sun and worshipped theeG
And wayworn followers of the Indian sageW
Have found the peace of God beneath a spreading treeG
-
But One but One ah child most dearV
And perfect image of the Love UnseenX
Walked every day in pastures greenX
And all his life the quiet waters byA
Reading their beauty with a tranquil eyeA
-
To him the desert was a place preparedY
For weary hearts to restZ
The hillside was a temple blestZ
The grassy vale a banquet roomA2
Where he could feed and comfort many a guestZ
With him the lily sharedY
The vital joy that breathes itself in bloomA2
And every bird that sang beside the nestZ
Told of the love that broods o'er every living thingB2
He watched the shepherd bringB2
His flock at sundown to the welcome foldC2
The fisherman at daybreak flingB2
His net across the waters gray and coldC2
And all day long the patient reaper swingB2
His curving sickle through the harvest goldC2
So through the world the foot path way he trodD2
Drawing the air of heaven in every breathE2
And in the evening sacrifice of deathE2
Beneath the open sky he gave his soul to GodD2
Him will I trust and for my Master takeF2
Him will I follow and for his dear sakeF2
God of the open airB
To thee I make my prayerB

-
From the prison of anxious thought that greed has buildedD2
From the fetters that envy has wrought and pride has gildedD2
From the noise of the crowded ways and the fierce confusionG2
From the folly that wastes its days in a world of illusionG2
Ah but the life is lost that frets and languishes thereB
I would escape and be free in the joy of the open airB
-
By the breadth of the blue that shines in silence o'er meG
By the length of the mountain lines that stretch before meG
By the height of the cloud that sails with rest in motionG2
Over the plains and the vales to the measureless oceanG2
Oh how the sight of the things that are great enlarges the eyesH2
Lead me out of the narrow life to the peace of the hillsI2
and the skiesH2
-
While the tremulous leafy haze on the woodland is spreadingB2
And the bloom on the meadow betrays where May has been treadingB2
While the birds on the branches above and the brooks flowing underJ
Are singing together of love in a world full of wonderJ
Lo in the marvel of Springtime dreams are changed into truthJ2
Quicken my heart and restore the beautiful hopes of youthJ2
-
By the faith that the flowers show when they bloom unbiddenG2
By the calm of the river's flow to a goal that is hiddenG2
By the trust of the tree that clings to its deep foundationG2
By the courage of wild birds' wings on the long migrationG2
Wonderful secret of peace that abides in Nature's breastD2
Teach me how to confide and live my life and restD2
-
For the comforting warmth of the sun that my body embracesK2
For the cool of the waters that run through the shadowy placesL2
For the balm of the breezes that brush my face with their fingersM2
For the vesper hymn of the thrush when the twilight lingersM2
For the long breath the deep breath the breathE2
of a heart without careB
I will give thanks and adore thee God of the open airB

VIA
-
These are the gifts I askN2
Of thee Spirit sereneG2
Strength for the daily taskN2
Courage to face the roadD2
Good cheer to help me bear the traveller's loadD2
And for the hours of rest that come betweenG2
An inward joy in all things heard and seenG2
These are the sins I fainG2
Would have thee take awayO2
Malice and cold disdainG2
Hot anger sullen hateD2
Scorn of the lowly envy of the greatD2
And discontent that casts a shadow grayO2
On all the brightness of the common dayO2
-
These are the things I prizeH2
And hold of dearest worthP2
Light of the sapphire skiesH2
Peace of the silent hillsI2
Shelter of forests comfort of the grassQ2
Music of birds murmur of little rillsQ2
Shadow of clouds that swiftly passQ2
And after showersQ2
The smell of flowersQ2
And of the good brown earthP2
And best of all along the way friendship and mirthP2
-
So let me keepR2
These treasures of the humble heartD2
In true possession owning them by love-
And when at last I can no longer move-
Among them freely but must partD2
From the green fields and from the waters clearV
Let me not creepR2
Into some darkened room and hideD2
From all that makes the world so bright and dearV
But throw the windows wideD2
To welcome in the lightD2
And while I clasp a well beloved handD2
Let me once more have sightD2
Of the deep sky and the far smiling landD2
Then gently fall on sleepR2
And breathe my body back to Nature's careB
My spirit out to thee God of the open airB
