Vitai Lampada Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD CECEFDFD GCHCCDCD

There's a breathless hush in the Close to nightA
Ten to make and the match to winB
A bumping pitch and a blinding lightA
An hour to play and the last man inB
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coatC
Or the selfish hope of a season's fameD
But his Captain's hand on his shoulder smoteC
Play up play up and play the gameD
-
The sand of the desert is sodden redC
Red with the wreck of a square that brokeE
The Gatling's jammed and the colonel deadC
And the regiment blind with dust and smokeE
The river of death has brimmed his banksF
And England's far and Honour a nameD
But the voice of schoolboy rallies the ranksF
Play up play up and play the gameD
-
This is the word that year by yearG
While in her place the School is setC
Every one of her sons must hearH
And none that hears it dare forgetC
This they all with a joyful mindC
Bear through life like a torch in flameD
And falling fling to the host behindC
Play up play up and play the gameD
