The School At War Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ DKDK

All night before the brink of deathA
In fitful sleep the army layB
For through the dream that stilled their breathA
Too gauntly glared the coming dayB
-
But we within whose blood there leapsC
The fulness of a life as wideD
As Avon's water where he sweepsC
Seaward at last with Severn's tideD
-
We heard beyond the desert nightE
The murmur of the fields we knewF
And our swift souls with one delightE
Like homing swallows Northward flewF
-
We played again the immortal gamesG
And grappled with the fierce old friendsH
And cheered the dead undying namesG
And sang the song that never endsH
-
Till when the hard familiar bellI
Told that the summer night was lateJ
Where long ago we said farewellI
We said farewell by the old gateJ
-
O Captains unforgot they criedD
Come you again or come no moreK
Across the world you keep the prideD
Across the world we mark the scoreK
