The Only Son Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB ACAC DED AFA

O Bitter wind toward the sunset blowingA
What of the dales to nightB
In yonder gray old hall what fires are glowingA
What ring of festal lightB
-
In the great window as the day was dwindlingA
I saw an old man standC
His head was proudly held and his eyes kindlingA
But the list shook in his handC
-
O wind of twilight was there no word utteredD
No sound of joy or wailE
'A great fight and a good death ' he mutteredD
'Trust him he would not fail '-
-
What of the chamber dark where she was lyingA
For whom all life is doneF
Within her heart she rocks a dead child cryingA
'My son my ltttle son '-
