Sitting at times over a hearth that burnsA
With dull domestic glowB
My thought leaving the book gratefully turnsA
To you who planned it soB
-
Not of the great only you deigned to tellC
The stars by which we steerD
But lights out of the night that flashed and fellC
Tonight again are hereE
-
Such as were those dogs of an elder dayF
Who sacked the golden portsG
And those later who dared grapple their preyF
Beneath the harbour fortsG
-
Some with flag at the fore sweeping the worldH
To find an equal fightI
And some who joined war to their trade and hurledH
Ships of the line in flightI
-
Whether their fame centuries long should ringJ
They cared not over muchK
But cared greatly to serve God and the kingJ
And keep the Nelson touchK
-
And fought to build Britain above the tideL
Of wars and windy fateM
And passed content leaving to us the prideL
Of lives obscurely greatM
