Laudabunt Alii (after Horace) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHII JKJKLL MNMNHH

Let others praise as fancy willsA
Berlin beneath her treesB
Or Rome upon her seven hillsA
Or Venice by her seasB
Stamboul by double tides embracedC
Or green Damascus in the wasteC
-
For me there's nought I would not leaveD
For the good Devon landE
Whose orchards down the echoing cleeveD
Bedewed with spray drift standE
And hardly bear the red fruit upF
That shall be next year's cider cupF
-
You too my friend may wisely markG
How clear skies follow rainH
And lingering in your own green parkG
Or drilled on Laffan's PlainH
Forget not with the festal bowlI
To soothe at times your weary soulI
-
When Drake must bid to Plymouth HoeJ
Good bye for many a dayK
And some were sad and feared to goJ
And some that dared not stayK
Be sure he bade them broach the bestL
And raised his tankard with the restL
-
Drake's luck to all that sail with DrakeM
For promised lands of goldN
Brave lads whatever storms may breakM
We've weathered worse of oldN
To night the loving cup we'll drainH
To morrow for the Spanish MainH
