Riding at dawn riding aloneA
Gillespie left the town behindB
Before he turned by the Westward roadC
A horseman crossed him staggering blindB
-
The Devil's abroad in false VelloreD
The Devil that stabs by night he saidE
Women and children rank and fileF
Dying and dead dying and deadE
-
Without a word without a groanA
Sudden and swift Gillespie turnedG
The blood roared in his ears like fireD
Like fire the road beneath him burnedG
-
He thundered back to Arcot gateH
He thundered up through Arcot townI
Before he thought a second thoughtJ
In the barrack yard he lighted downI
-
Trumpeter sound for the Light DragoonsK
Sound to saddle and spur he saidE
He that is ready may ride with meL
And he that can may ride aheadE
-
Fierce and fain fierce and fainM
Behind him went the troopers grimN
They rode as ride the Light DragoonsK
But never a man could ride with himN
-
Their rowels ripped their horses' sidesK
Their hearts were red with a deeper goadC
But ever alone before them allO
Gillespie rode Gillespie rodeC
-
Alone he came to false VelloreD
The walls were lined the gates were barredP
Alone he walked where the bullets bitQ
And called above to the Sergeant's GuardP
-
Sergeant Sergeant over the gateH
Where are your officers all he saidE
Heavily came the Sergeant's voiceK
There are two living and forty deadE
-
A rope a rope Gillespie criedR
They bound their belts to serve his needS
There was not a rebel behind the wallO
But laid his barrel and drew his beadS
-
There was not a rebel among them allO
But pulled his trigger and cursed his aimT
For lightly swung and rightly swungU
Over the gate Gillespie cameT
-
He dressed the line he led the chargeV
They swept the wall like a stream in spateH
And roaring over the roar they heardW
The galloper guns that burst the gateH
-
Fierce and fain fierce and fainM
The troopers rode the reeking flightX
The very stones remember stillY
The end of them that stab by nightX
-
They've kept the tale a hundred yearsK
They'll keep the tale a hundred moreD
Riding at dawn riding aloneA
Gillespie came to false VelloreD
