Felix Antonius (after Martial) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDEC FGHF IJJI

To day my friend is seventy fiveA
He tells his tale with no regretB
His brave old eyes are steadfast yetB
His heart the lightest heart aliveA
-
He sees behind him green and wideC
The pathway of his pilgrim yearsD
He sees the shore and dreadless hearsE
The whisper of the creeping tideC
-
For out of all his days not oneF
Has passed and left its unlaid ghostG
To seek a light for ever lostH
Or wail a deed for ever doneF
-
So for reward of life long truthI
He lives again as good men canJ
Redoubling his allotted spanJ
With memories of a stainless youthI
