Lad and can you rest nowA
There beneath your hillB
Your hands are on your breast nowA
But is your heart so stillB
'Twas the right death to die ladC
A gift without regretD
But unless truth's a lie ladC
You dream of Devon yetD
-
Ay ay the year's awakingE
The fire's among the lingE
The beechen hedge is breakingE
The curlew's on the wingE
Primroses are out ladC
On the high banks of LeeF
And the sun stirs the trout ladC
From Brendon to the seaF
-
I know what's in your heart ladC
The mare he used to huntG
And her blue market cart ladC
With posies tied in frontG
We miss them from the moor roadH
They're getting old to roamI
The road they're on's a sure roadH
And nearer lad to homeI
-
Your name the name they cherishJ
'Twill fade lad 'tis trueK
But stone and all may perishJ
With little loss to youK
While fame's fame you're Devon ladC
The Glory of the WestL
Till the roll's called in heaven ladC
You may well take your restL
