Hail sov'reign love that first beganA
The scheme to rescue fallen manA
Hail matchless free eternal graceB
That gave my soul a Hiding PlaceB
-
Against the God that rules the skyC
I fought with hands uplifted highC
Despis'd the mentions of his graceB
Too proud to seek a Hiding PlaceB
-
Enwrapt in thick Egyptian nightD
And fond of darkness more than lightD
Madly I ran the sinful raceB
Secure without a Hiding PlaceB
-
But thus the eternal counsel ranA
Almighty Love arrest that manA
I felt the arrows of distressE
And saw that I'd no Hiding PlaceB
-
Indignant Justice stood in viewF
To Sina's fiery mount I flewF
But Justice cry'd with frowning faceB
This mountain is no Hiding PlaceB
-
Ere long a Heav'nly voice I heardG
And Mercy's angel form appear'dH
She led me on with placid paceB
To Jesus as my Hiding PlaceB
-
Should storms of sevenfold thunder rollI
And shake the globe from pole to poleI
No flaming bolt should daunt my faceB
For Jesus is my Hiding PlaceB
-
On him almighty vengeance fellJ
That must have sunk the world to hellJ
He bore it for the chosen raceB
And thus became their Hiding PlaceB
-
A few more rolling suns at mostK
Shall land us on fair Canaan's coastK
Where we shall sing the song of graceB
And see our glorious Hiding PlaceB
