'Twas the night before Christmas when all thro' the houseA
Not a creature was stirring not even a mouseA
The stockings were hung by the chimney with careB
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be thereB
The children were nestled all snug in their bedsC
While visions of sugar plums danc'd in their headsC
And mama in her 'kerchief and I in my capD
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's napD
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatterE
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matterE
Away to the window I flew like a flashF
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sashF
The boon on the breast of the new fallen snowG
Gave the lustre of mid day to objects belowG
When what to my wondering eyes should appearH
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein deerH
With a little old driver so lively and quickI
I new in a moment it must be St NickI
More rapid than eagles his coursers they cameJ
And he whistled and shouted and call'd them by nameJ
quot Now Dasher now Dancer now Prancer and VixenK
quot On Comet on Cupid on Dunder and BlixemJ
quot To the top of the porch to the top of the wallL
quot Now dash away dash away dash away all quotM
As dry leaves before the wild hurricane flyN
When they meet with an obstacle mount to the skyN
So up to the house top the coursers they flewO
With the sleigh full of Toys and St Nicholas tooO
And then in a twinkling I heard on the rootM
The prancing and pawing of each little hoofP
As I drew in my head and was turning aroundM
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a boundM
He was dress'd in fur from his head to his footM
And his clothes were all tarnish'd with ashes and sootM
A bundle of toys was flung on his backQ
And he look'd like a peddler just opening his packQ
His eyes how they twinkled his dimples how merryR
His cheeks were like roses his nose like a cherryR
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bowS
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snowG
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teethT
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreathT
He had a broad face and a little round bellyR
That shook when he laugh'd like a bowl full of jellyR
He was chubby and plump a right jolly old elfU
And I laugh'd when I saw him in spite of myselfU
A wink of his eye hand a twist of his headM
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dreadM
He spoke not a word but went straight to his workV
And fill'd all the stockings and turn'd with a jerkV
And laying his finger aside of his noseW
And giving a nod up the chimney he roseW
He spring to his sleigh to his team gave a whistleX
And away they all flew like the down of a thistleX
But I heard him exclaim ere he drove out of siteM
Happy Christmas to all and to all a good nightM
