That seems to stand alone	B
Tis William Street the vague street	A
With terraces of stone	B
That starts with clean cool pockets	C
And ancient stable ways	D
And built by solid landlords	E
And in more solid days	D
Beginning where the shadow streets	F
Of vacant wealth begin	G
Street William runs down sadly	H
Across the vale of sin	G
Tis William Street the haggard	I
Where all the streets are mean	J
That s trying to be honest	K
That s trying to keep clean	J

No pavement exhibition	O
Of carcases and slops	N
But old established principles	N

To business and the theatres	N
Or empty luxury	H
Tis William Street the East end	Q
The world wise and exempt	R
That sells Potts Point its purgatives	N
With something of contempt	R

As England used to be	H
Old houses once in gardens	N
And signs of Italy	H
With hints of the forgotten	O
Strange Sydney of the past	T
When bricks were burnt for all time	U
And walls were built to last	T

From stagnant dust and heat	A
Old trees by the Museum	V
Hold back with hands and feet	A
And where the blind are plying	W
Deft fingers supple wrists	N
Tis William Street exclusive	X
Where pray the Methodists	N

The blind courts see the clearer	Y
Side lanes grow trim and neat	A
The wretched streets are cleaner	Y
That run from William Street	A
The sick streets lonely matron	O
Seems stern as matrons do	Z
