William Street Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEDFGHGIJKJ LMNMONNN PHNHQRNR SHNHOTUT NAVAWNXN YAYAOZWZ

Tis William Street the link streetA
That seems to stand aloneB
Tis William Street the vague streetA
With terraces of stoneB
That starts with clean cool pocketsC
And ancient stable waysD
And built by solid landlordsE
And in more solid daysD
Beginning where the shadow streetsF
Of vacant wealth beginG
Street William runs down sadlyH
Across the vale of sinG
Tis William Street the haggardI
Where all the streets are meanJ
That s trying to be honestK
That s trying to keep cleanJ
-
Tis William Street with methodL
And nought of show or prideM
That tries to keep its businessN
Upon the right hand sideM
No pavement exhibitionO
Of carcases and slopsN
But old established principlesN
In old established shopsN
-
Tis William Street the highwayP
Whichever way it beH
To business and the theatresN
Or empty luxuryH
Tis William Street the East endQ
The world wise and exemptR
That sells Potts Point its purgativesN
With something of contemptR
-
With fronts that hint of EnglandS
As England used to beH
Old houses once in gardensN
And signs of ItalyH
With hints of the forgottenO
Strange Sydney of the pastT
When bricks were burnt for all timeU
And walls were built to lastT
-
Tis William Street that risesN
From stagnant dust and heatA
Old trees by the MuseumV
Hold back with hands and feetA
And where the blind are plyingW
Deft fingers supple wristsN
Tis William Street exclusiveX
Where pray the MethodistsN
-
The blind courts see the clearerY
Side lanes grow trim and neatA
The wretched streets are cleanerY
That run from William StreetA
The sick streets lonely matronO
Seems stern as matrons doZ
Tis William Street redeemingW
Regenerating LooZ
