Why He Lost The Track Or, The Black Tracker Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KGKG LMLM

There was a tracker in the forceA
Of wondrous sight the story ranB
He never failed to track a horseA
He never failed to find his manB
-
They brought him from a distant townC
Once more to gain reward and praiseD
Nor dreamed the man he hunted downC
Had saved his life in bygone daysD
-
Away across the farthest runE
And far across the stony plainF
The outlaw's horse's tracks each oneE
Unto the black man's eyes were plainF
-
Those tracks across the ranges wideG
Right well he knew that he could traceH
And oft he turned aside to hideG
The tears upon his dusky faceH
-
Now was his time for he could claimI
Reward and praise if he prevailedJ
Now was the time to win him fameI
When all the other blacks had failedJ
-
He struggled well to play his partK
For in the art he took a prideG
But ah there beat a white man's heartK
Beneath his old black wrinkled hideG
-
Against that heart he struggled wellL
But gratitude was in the blackM
He failed and only he could tellL
The reason why he lost the trackM
