I gaze upon my son once moreA
With eyes and heart that tireB
As solemnly he stands beforeA
The screen drawn round the fireB
With hands behind clasped hand in handC
Now loosely and now fastD
Just as his fathers used to standC
For generations pastD
A fair and slight and childish formE
And big brown thoughtful eyesF
God help him for a life of stormE
And stress before him liesF
A wanderer and a gipsy wildG
I ve learnt the world and knowH
For I was such another childG
Ah many years agoH
-
But in those dreamy eyes of himI
There is no hint of doubtJ
I wish that you could tell me JimI
The things you dream aboutJ
Dream on my son that all is trueK
And things not what they seemL
Twill be a bitter day for youK
When wakened from your dreamL
-
You are a child of field and floodM
But with the gipsy strainsN
A strong Norwegian sailor s bloodM
Is running through your veinsN
Be true and slander never stingsO
Be straight and all may frownP
You ll have the strength to grapple thingsO
That dragged your father downP
-
These lines I write with bitter tearsQ
And failing heart and handC
But you will read in after yearsR
And you will understandC
You ll hear the slander of the crowdS
They ll whisper tales of shameT
But days will come when you ll be proudS
To bear your father s nameT
-
But oh beware of bitternessU
When you are wronged my ladV
I wish I had the faith in menW
And women that I hadV
Tis better far for I have feltX
The sadness in my songY
To trust all men and still be wrongedZ
Than to trust none and wrongY
-
Be generous and still do goodA2
And banish while you liveB2
The spectre of ingratitudeA2
That haunts the ones who giveC2
But if the crisis comes at lengthD2
That your future might be marredA2
Strike hard my son with all your strengthD2
For your own self s sake strike hardA2
