The Uncultured Rhymer To His Cultured Critics Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEGEHEH IJIJKLKL MNMOPOPO QLQLRJRJ

Fight through ignorance want and careA
Through the griefs that crush the spiritB
Push your way to a fortune fairA
And the smiles of the world you ll meritB
Long as a boy for the chance to learnC
For the chance that Fate denies youD
Win degrees where the Life lights burnC
And scores will teach and advise youD
My cultured friends you have come too lateE
With your bypath nicely gradedF
I ve fought thus far on my track of FateE
And I ll follow the rest unaidedG
Must I be stopped by a college gateE
On the track of Life encroachingH
Be dumb to Love and be dumb to HateE
For the lack of a college coachingH
-
You grope for Truth in a language deadI
In the dust neath tower and steepleJ
What know you of the tracks we treadI
And what know you of our peopleJ
I must read this and that and the restK
And write as the cult expects meL
I ll read the book that may please me bestK
And write as my heart directs meL
-
You were quick to pick on a faulty lineM
That I strove to put my soul inN
Your eyes were keen for a dash of mineM
In the place of a semi colonO
And blind to the rest And is it for suchP
As you I must brook restrictionO
I was taught too little I learnt too muchP
To care for a pedant s dictionO
-
Must I turn aside from my destined wayQ
For a task your Joss would find meL
I come with strength of the living dayQ
And with half the world behind meL
I leave you alone in your cultured hallsR
To drivel and croak and cavilJ
Till your voice goes further than college wallsR
Keep out of the tracks we travelJ
