FROM north to south throughout the yearA
The shearing seasons runB
The Queensland stations start to shearA
When Maoriland has doneB
But labour s cheap and runs are wideC
And some the track must treadD
From New Year s Day till ChristmastideD
And never get a shedD
North west and south south west and northE
They lead and follow FateD
The stoutest hearts that venture forthE
The swagman and his mateD
-
A restless homeless class they areF
Who tramp in BorderlandD
They take their rest neath moon and starF
Their bed the desert sandD
On sunset tracks they ride and trampG
Till speech has almost diedD
And still they drift from camp to campG
In silence side by sideD
They think and dream as all men doD
Perchance their dreams are greatD
Each other s thoughts are sacred toD
The swagman and his mateD
-
With scrubs beneath the stifling skiesH
Unstirred by heaven s breathI
Beyond the Darling Timber liesH
The land of living deathI
A land that wrong born poets braveJ
Till dulled minds cease to gropeK
A land where all things perish saveJ
The memories of HopeK
When daylight s fingers point out backL
And seem to hesitateD
The far faint dust cloud marks their trackL
The swagman and his mateD
-
And one who followed through the scrubM
And out across the plainN
And only in a bitter moodD
Would seek those tracks againO
Can only write what he has seenP
Can only give his handD
And greet those mates in words that meanP
I know I understandD
-
I hope they ll find the squatter whiteD
The cook and shearers straightD
When they have reached the shed to nightD
The swagman and his mateD
