They towed the Seabolt down the streamA
And through the harbour s mouthB
She spread her wings and sailed awayC
To seek the sunny SouthB
-
But ah she met with storm on stormD
Ere half her course had runE
And all her masts were torn awayC
And all her boats save oneE
-
The good old ship had settled farF
Beneath her cargo lineG
Her riven sides were drinking deepH
The draughts of ocean brineG
-
There gathered round the only boatI
The women pale with fearJ
And trembling little ones who clungK
To those who held them dearJ
-
Then spoke the captain brave and trueL
His voice rose o er the roarM
The boat will save us all but fiveN
She cannot float with moreM
-
And backward from the side he steppedO
He had been born at seaP
Now who will seek in ocean s depthsQ
A sailor s grave with meP
-
Then up there stepped a merchant stoutR
His face was brown and tanS
I ll volunteer to stay on boardT
For I m an EnglishmanE
-
Then spoke a gallant gentlemanE
A lover of romanceU
Remain I for the ladies sakeV
For I m a son of FranceU
-
And next there spoke a HighlanderW
Go search the wide world roundX
You ll find no spot where on the earthY
A Scotsman is not foundX
-
And then there spoke a lad to whomZ
Killarney s lakes were dearJ
It won t be said that Ireland foundX
No place of honour hereA2
-
The boat pushed from the vessel s sideB2
Amid the ringing cheersC2
And now beneath Old Ocean sleepH
The Seabolt s volunteersC2
