The Scamps Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKM NGNGOPOP KLKLQRQR

Of home name and wealth and ambition bereftA
We are children of fortune and luckB
They deny there s a shred of our characters leftA
But they cannot deny us the pluckB
We are vagabond scamps we are kings over allC
There is little on earth we desireD
We are devils who stand with our backs to the wallC
And who call on the cowards to fireD
-
There are some of us here who were noble and goodE
And who learnt in ingratitude s schoolsF
They were born of the selfish and misunderstoodE
They were soft they were smoodgers or foolsF
With their hands in their pockets to help every friendG
In a fix and they never asked howH
Beware of them you who have money to lendG
For it s little you d get from them nowH
-
There are some of us here who were lovers of oldI
In the days that were nearer to GodJ
The girl was more precious than honour or goldI
And they worshipped the ground where she trodJ
But she trampled their hearts and they suffered and knewK
How the soul of a woman to readL
They will never again to a woman be trueK
Let the girls who may meet them take heedM
-
There are some of us here who were devils from birthN
Who would steal the eye out of a friendG
But we judge not or blame not the worst on the earthN
For it comes to the same in the endG
There are some of us here who were ruined by wrongO
To whom justice and love came too lateP
And they threw them aside and go singing a songO
And they know that their mistress is fateP
-
We were some of us failures at suicide tooK
We are most of us back from the deadL
But we ve all found the courage to battle it throughK
Till the strength of our bodies is spedL
With a flag that is dyed with our hearts blood unfurledQ
We are marching and marching afarR
We are comrades of all who are fighting the worldQ
For the world made us all what we areR
