Let bushmen think as bushmen willA
And say whate er they chooseB
I hate to hear the stupid sneerC
At New Chum JackaroosB
He may not ride as you can rideD
Or do what you can doE
But sometimes you d seem small besideD
The New Chum JackarooC
-
His share of work he never shirksB
And through the blazing droughtF
He lives the old things down and worksB
His own salvation outF
-
When older wiser chums despondF
He battles brave of heartF
Twas he who sailed of old beyondF
The margin of the chartF
-
Twas he who proved the world was roundF
In crazy square canoesB
The lands you re living in were foundF
By New Chum JackaroosB
-
He crossed the deserts hot and bareC
From barren hungry shoresB
The plains that you would scarcely dareC
With all your tanks and boresB
-
He fought a way through stubborn hillsB
Towards the setting sunG
Your fathers all and Burke and WillsB
Were New Chums every oneG
-
When England fought with all the worldF
In those brave days gone byH
And all its strength against her hurledF
He held her honour highH
-
By Southern palms and Northern pinesB
Where er was life to loseB
She held her own with thin red linesB
Of New Chum JackaroosB
-
Through shot and shell and solitudesB
Wherever feet have goneI
The New Chums fought while eye glass dudesB
And Johnnies led them onJ
-
And though he wear a foppish coatF
And these old things forgetF
In stormy times I d give a voteF
For Cuffs and Collars yetF
