The men who camp with DangerA
Are mostly quiet menB
And one may use a rifleC
And one may use a penB
And one may strap a cameraD
In deserts to his bikeE
But men who sleep with DangerA
Are pretty much alikeE
To men in places pleasantF
Or in the barren WestG
There s Danger ever presentF
A half unheeded guestG
But thoughtful for the strangerA
The timid or the weakH
The men who camp with DangerA
Keep watch but do not speakH
The men who go with DangerA
Are mostly dreamy eyedI
Upon the swooping fo c sleC
Or by the camp fire sideI
And when they sit in darknessJ
To show us where they areK
The glowing of a pipe bowlC
And often a cigarK
The men who camp with DangerA
Have quiet humour tooL
And songs that you ve forgottenM
And real good yarns for youL
There s little you can tell themN
Of yourself or your ownO
That men who ve lived with DangerA
Have never felt or knownO
The men who sleep with DangerA
Sleep soundly while they mayP
But always wake at midnightQ
Or just before the dayP
A something in the darknessJ
That shudders at the dawnR
A side mate softly wakenedP
A rifle swiftly drawnR
The men who sail with DangerA
As actors are idealC
They lightly laugh to fool youL
When Danger s very realC
The men who sail with DangerA
A wondrous insight haveS
They know if you are timidP
They know if you are braveT
The stewards set the tablesU
With careless practised careV
And take accustomed comfortsW
To sea sick cabins thereV
They knock at doors of state roomsX
With broth and tea and toastP
While well they know it s touch and goY
And death sits on the coastP
The man who lives with DangerA
Has knowledge all his ownO
The instinct of a womanM
Of men who fight aloneO
He learns from peace and comfortP
He learns from care and strifeZ
Unwittingly from all thingsA2
And from his native wifeZ
The men who live with DangerA
See sermons in a logB2
They have the nerves of horsesC2
The instincts of a dogB2
When illness comes to loved onesD2
They know where er they roamE2
Have you seen without for reasonM
A farther start for homeE2
They know and feel our 'warnings'D2
As only Gipsies doL
They know the Norse VardogerA
They hear and see it tooL
They know when death has passed themN
And the death watch is at endP
They know when he is comingF2
The Unexpected FriendP
The men who live with DangerA
They take things as they goY
In seeming unpreparednessD2
To those who do not knowY
They sleep when they have toiled and laughedP
And fought for someone s sakeG2
But Danger whispers in their earA
And they are wide awakeG2
