The Men We Might Have Been Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABACAD EFEFGCGD AHAHICID JKJKJCJD

When God's wrath cloud is o'er meA
Affrighting heart and mindB
When days seem dark before meA
And days seem black behindB
Those friends who think they know meA
Who deem their insight keenC
They ne'er forget to show meA
The man I might have beenD
-
He's rich and independentE
Or rising fast to fameF
His bright star is ascendantE
The country knows his nameF
His houses and his gardensG
Are splendid to be seenC
His fault the wise world pardonsG
The man I might have beenD
-
His fame and fortune haunt meA
His virtues wave me backH
His name and prestige daunt meA
When I would take the trackH
But you my friend true heartedI
God keep our friendship greenC
You know how I was partedI
From all I might have beenD
-
But what avails the ache ofJ
Remorse or weak regretK
We'll battle for the sake ofJ
The men we might be yetK
We'll strive to keep in sight ofJ
The brave the true and cleanC
And triumph yet in spite ofJ
The men we might have beenD
