The Heart Of The Swag Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABACACDADADCDC EDEDACAC

Oh the track through the scrub groweth ever more drearyA
And lower and lower his grey head doth bowB
For the swagman is old and the swagman is wearyA
He s been tramping for over a century nowB
He tramps in a worn out old side spring and blucherA
His hat is a ruin his coat is a ragC
And he carries forever far into the futureA
The key of his life in the core of his swagC
There are old fashioned portraits of girls who are granniesD
There are tresses of dark hair whose owner s are greyA
There are faded old letters from Marys and AnniesD
And Toms Dicks and Harrys dead many a dayA
There are broken heart secrets and bitter heart reasonsD
They are sewn in a canvas or calico bagC
And wrapped up in oilskin through dark rainy seasonsD
And he carries them safe in the core of his swagC
-
There are letters that should have been burnt in the past timeE
For he reads them alone and a devil it bringsD
There were farewells that should have been said for the last timeE
For forever and ever the love for her springsD
But he keeps them all precious and keeps them in orderA
And no matter to man how his footsteps may dragC
There s a friend who will find when he crosses the BorderA
That the Heart of the Man s in the Heart of his swagC
