The battlefield behind usA
And night loomed on the trackB
The Friends of Fallen FortunesC
Were riding at my backB
Save those who lay face upwardD
Upon the sodden plainE
Not one of all I d trustedF
Was missing from my trainE
-
A draggled train and blood stainedG
With helmets dented inH
With battered loosened armourI
But with a cheerful grinH
No dark look bent upon meJ
I noted to my shameK
That Friends of Fallen FortunesC
Are aye the last to blameK
-
-
Not one of all I d trustedF
Who d followed to their costL
Save those who lay face upwardD
On that red field I d lostM
And here and there a soldierI
I d trusted not at allN
Like an unexpected mournerI
At a poor man s funeralO
-
And as the horses stumbledP
And the footmen limped alongQ
They all joined in the chorusA
Of a good old Next Time songQ
Behind us in the distanceR
By hill and lane and woodS
My ever dwindling rear guardT
Fell back again and stoodS
-
They recked not wounds nor lossesU
They all seemed very kindV
From knight who rode beside meJ
To boor who limped behindV
And some borne in their littersW
Through that long agonyJ
Their death white pain drawn facesU
Had no reproach for meJ
-
And so from noon till darknessA
Till morning grim and greyX
The Earl s son and the Peasant sY
Were brothers that dark dayX
I straightened in my saddleO
And proudly glanced me roundZ
I still was King of ComradesA2
Whoever might be crownedZ
-
I straightened in my saddleO
And glanced round proudly thenB2
Whoe er might reign a seasonC2
I held the hearts of menB2
No power of gold can buy themD2
While battles shall be foughtE2
The Friends of Fallen FortunesC
Are never to be boughtF2
-
Through rain and marsh and hungerI
To what their fate might bringG2
The remnants of my legionsC
Toiled on to join their KingG2
From north and south the captainsC
Of scattered bands won throughH2
Beneath its beaten coloursC
My beaten army grewH2
-
And in the West before usC
The West was ever thusC
More Friends of Fallen FortunesC
Were gathering food for usC
For refuge and for succourH2
For safety food and restI2
The best of beaten armiesC
For ever seek the WestI2
-
-
With these men for my captainsC
When we marched east againB2
Our enemies were scatteredD
Like dust across the plainE
Our city lay before usC
And as we marched alongQ
We joined the grand old chorusC
Of the glorious Next Time songQ
And though they wear no armourH2
And bear no blade nor billJ2
The Friends of Fallen FortunesC
Are riding with me stillJ2
And many times defeatedK2
By city field and seaC
The Friends of Fallen FortunesC
March on to VictoryC
