They sunk a post into the groundA
Where their leaders bade them stopB
It was a man s height and they spikedC
A crosspiece to the topB
They bound it well with thongs of hideD
To make it firm and goodE
Then roughly with His back to thisF
Their enemy they stoodE
They held His hands upon the pieceG
And they spiked them to the woodE
They mocked Him then the while He rockedH
In agony His headI
With things that He had never doneJ
And He had never saidI
With that which He had never beenK
And in His face they spatL
They placed a plank beside the postM
And they spiked His feet to thatL
-
They pelted Him but not with stonesN
Lest He should die too soonO
They stayed to mock His agonyP
All through the blazing noonO
They did not pelt with stones lest theyQ
Might kill Him unawareR
But with foul things that lay aboutS
The filthy hovels thereR
-
And this was how they murdered HimT
They killed Him in his youthU
Because He had been good to menV
Because He told the truthU
Because they did not understandW
The things He felt and knewX
He only said the world old wordsY
They know not what they doX
-
The flaunting harlots taunted HimT
He only bowed His headI
And prayed for public women thenV
While Save Thyself they saidI
They went with soldiers to the campZ
And the rest went by and byeA2
When they were weary of the sportB2
And they left Him there to dieA2
-
He lingered yet for He was strongC2
But He shut His blighted eyesD2
And shuddered oft for round Him swarmedE2
The loathsome desert fliesD2
His throat was parched His temples throbbedE2
And when He drooped the painF2
That shot from all His wounds tenfoldE2
Would draw Him up againV
-
Two thieves were nailed beside Him thereR
They raved their wounds they toreG2
And though they both were stronger menV
They seemed to suffer moreG2
And while with agony great beadsH2
Of sweat stood on His browI2
He d comfort them in words like theseJ2
Twill soon be ended nowI2
-
His friends had all deserted HimT
They fled in deadly fearK2
As friends desert a friend to dayE2
Afraid of jibe and sneerK2
The same poor human nature nowI2
As it has ever beenK
Small credit to be crucifiedE2
Beside a NazareneK
-
But when the people in the townK
And the drunken soldiers sleptE2
From some mean huts that stood hard byA2
Three wretched women creptE2
Like thieves across the stony groundE2
They came with stealthy treadE2
And they had water in a gourdE2
But they found that He was deadE2
-
They brought some still more wretched menK
And O their hearts were goodE2
In terror and with pains they wrenchedE2
The strong spikes from the woodE2
They washed His body hurriedlyP
For they had lives to saveL2
And they bore it off and hid it wellM2
Where none might find his graveL2
-
His name is known where er the footE2
Of Christian man has trodE2
They worship in cathedrals nowK
They call Him Son of GodE2
They ask for aid in His dear nameN2
When they suffer care and painK
And if He came on earth to dayE2
They d murder Him againK
