Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL EMNMOHOHOnce more I write a line to you | A |
While darker shadows fall | B |
Dear friends of mine who have been true | A |
And steadfast through it all | B |
If I have written bitter rhymes | C |
With many lines that halt | D |
And if I have been false at times | C |
It was not all my fault | D |
- | |
To Heaven s decree I would not bow | E |
And I sank very low | F |
The bitter things are written now | E |
And we must let them go | F |
But I feel softened as I write | G |
The better spirit springs | H |
And I am very sad to night | G |
Because of many things | H |
- | |
The friendships that I have abused | I |
The trust I did betray | J |
The talents that I have misused | I |
The gifts I threw away | J |
The things that did me little good | K |
And well my cheeks might burn | L |
The kindly letters that I should | K |
Have answered by return | L |
- | |
But you might deem them answered now | E |
And answered from my heart | M |
And injured friends will understand | N |
Tis I who feel the smart | M |
But I have done with barren strife | O |
And dark imaginings | H |
And in my future work and life | O |
Will seek the better things | H |
