The Cross-roads Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL EMNMOHOH

Once more I write a line to youA
While darker shadows fallB
Dear friends of mine who have been trueA
And steadfast through it allB
If I have written bitter rhymesC
With many lines that haltD
And if I have been false at timesC
It was not all my faultD
-
To Heaven s decree I would not bowE
And I sank very lowF
The bitter things are written nowE
And we must let them goF
But I feel softened as I writeG
The better spirit springsH
And I am very sad to nightG
Because of many thingsH
-
The friendships that I have abusedI
The trust I did betrayJ
The talents that I have misusedI
The gifts I threw awayJ
The things that did me little goodK
And well my cheeks might burnL
The kindly letters that I shouldK
Have answered by returnL
-
But you might deem them answered nowE
And answered from my heartM
And injured friends will understandN
Tis I who feel the smartM
But I have done with barren strifeO
And dark imaginingsH
And in my future work and lifeO
Will seek the better thingsH
