The Cliffs Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF AAGG FFDD HHII JJKK

They sing of the grandeur of cliffs inlandA
But the cliffs of the ocean are truly grandA
And I long to wander and dream and doubtB
Where the cliffs by the ocean run out and outB
-
To the northward far as the eye can reachC
Are sandhill boulder and sandy beachC
But southward rises the track for meD
Where the cliffs by the ocean run out to seaD
-
Friends may be gone in the morning fairE
But the cliffs by the ocean are always thereE
Lovers may leave when the wind is chillF
But the cliffs by the ocean are steadfast stillF
-
They watch the sea and they ward the landA
And they warn the ships from the treacherous sandA
And I sadly think in the twilight hourG
What I might have been had I known my powerG
-
Where the smoke cloud blurs and the white sails fillF
They point the ships to keep seaward stillF
And I think Ah me and I think Ah meD
Of the wreck I d saved had I kept to seaD
-
Oh the cliffs are old and the cliffs are sadH
And they know me sane while men deem me madH
Oh the cliffs are firm and the cliffs are strongI
And they know me right while men deem me wrongI
-
And I sometimes think in the dawning grayJ
I am old as they I am old as theyJ
And I think I think that in field and townK
My spirit shall live till the cliffs come downK
