FROM Crow s Nest here by Sydney townA
Where crows had nests of oldB
I see the Range where day goes downA
The dim blue in the goldB
And sometimes wonder half in doubtC
Has there been so much changeD
As pictured in the prints aboutC
The Bush beyond the RangeD
-
There s motor car and all the frillsE
But none of my old matesF
The Bush seems run by Buff lo BillsE
And Hayseeds from the StatesF
I miss the homesteads and the scrubG
The stock and fences tooH
The horse and swagmen and the pubG
That Minns and Mahoney drewH
-
I miss the drivers diggers sheepI
And lots of things Ah wellJ
I wonder if the Kellys keepI
The Carrier s Camp HotelJ
If that still stands by hill and plainK
As old man Kelly s prideL
Or if he did pull round againM
When Mary Kelly diedL
-
And Andy Kelly took to drinkN
And Barney took a horseO
And two years hard without a blinkN
And each one took his courseO
And what became of Andy MackP
Tom Browne and Pat O BrineQ
It must be twenty seasons backP
Since last I had a lineQ
-
I wonder if but I forgetR
And wonder like a foolS
Is Bertha Lambert teaching yetR
A wretched half time schoolS
I hope ah how the memories comeT
To bother and deferU
I only hope my boyhood s chumT
Fred Spencer married herU
-
I wonder if the farms we hadV
Are scrub or ploughed ground nowW
A fence by Harry Dare or DadV
Would last it anyhowW
I wonder if the cemet ryU
Fenced in by Dad and DareU
Is lonely as it used to beX
When they were buried thereU
-
I wonder and the more it seemsY
So far away and strangeD
For I have lost except in dreamsY
The Bush beyond the RangeD
I wonder too in fear and shameZ
Do they like me forgetR
I wonder if they mind the nameZ
Of Henry Lawson yetR
