Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFAHAH IJIKLMNM OPOPQRSR TUVUWXLX YZYZDA2DA2 PQTQIB2IC2 D2E2JE2LF2LF2| Oh for the fire that used to glow | A |
| In those my days of old | B |
| I never thought a man could grow | A |
| So callous and so cold | B |
| Ah for the heart that used to ache | C |
| For those in sorrow s ways | D |
| I often wish my heart could break | C |
| As it did in those dead days | D |
| - | |
| Along my track of storm and stress | E |
| And it is plain to trace | F |
| I look back from the loneliness | G |
| And the depth of my disgrace | F |
| Twas fate and only fate I know | A |
| But all mistakes are plain | H |
| Tis sadder than the afterglow | A |
| More dreary than the rain | H |
| - | |
| But still there lies a patch of sun | I |
| That ne er will come again | J |
| Those golden days when I was one | I |
| Of Nature s gentlemen | K |
| And if there is a memory | L |
| Could break me down at last | M |
| It sure would be the thought of this | N |
| The sunshine in the past | M |
| - | |
| But spite of sunshine on the track | O |
| And well the sun might shine | P |
| My heart grows hard when I look back | O |
| From these dark days of mine | P |
| A nobler child was never born | Q |
| In all the Southern land | R |
| The slave of selfish ignorance | S |
| That could not understand | R |
| - | |
| Oh I had lived for many years | T |
| In a world of my ideal | U |
| With no false laughter no false tears | V |
| And it seemed very real | U |
| But I was wakened from my dreams | W |
| And learnt with hardening eyes | X |
| A world of selfish treachery | L |
| Of paltry shame and lies | X |
| - | |
| I left the truest friends on earth | Y |
| Who did not need my aid | Z |
| And worked for those who were not worth | Y |
| The sacrifice I made | Z |
| And while I blindly strove to raise | D |
| The coward and the clown | A2 |
| They sneaked behind by shady ways | D |
| And tore my palace down | A2 |
| - | |
| But let those faithless friends of mine | P |
| Who d think of me with scorn | Q |
| Remember that for many years | T |
| A heavy load I ve borne | Q |
| And my true friends when all is done | I |
| And my sad soul is gone | B2 |
| Will think of battles I have won | I |
| When I lead rivals on | C2 |
| - | |
| And though from spite and worldly things | D2 |
| I well should be exempt | E2 |
| For little men and paltry men | J |
| I scarce can feel contempt | E2 |
| They followed me with flattery | L |
| In the days when I was brave | F2 |
| But for those who have been true to me | L |
| I ll strike back from the grave | F2 |
