THE WORLD goes round old fellowA
And still I m in the swimB
While my wife s second husbandC
Is growing old and grimB
I meet him in the cityD
It all seems very tameE
He glances at me sometimesF
As if I were to blameE
-
Oh my wife s second husbandC
Was handsome young and trueG
He had his boyish visionsH
I had my visions tooG
He made a model loverI
The greenest in the gameE
They say when I was marriedJ
That I was just the sameE
-
Though I am ten years olderI
My hair is dark to dayK
While my wife s second husbandC
Is quickly growing greyK
I drank when first he knew meD
And he drank not at allL
I see that he through drinkingM
Is going to the wallL
-
A sweet ill treated womanN
A drunken brute Good LordO
Ah well she got her freedomP
And he got his rewardO
He ll fight it out a seasonN
For Fate will not be forcedQ
But my wife s second husbandC
Shall surely be divorcedQ
-
I sympathize and wonderI
What mutual friends would thinkR
If my wife s second husbandC
And I should have a drinkR
And I a mere bystanderI
It almost seems absurdS
Might lay propheticallyL
My hand on my wife s thirdS
-
But my wife s second husbandC
His sorrows shall forgetT
We ll clasp warm hands in friendshipU
And clink our glasses yetT
We ll smoke cigars togetherI
In pure philosophyD
While calmly contemplatingM
The fate of number threeD
