Grey Wolves Grey Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAABBCCDDBB EEBBBB FFFBB GHIIBB JJJJBBKKB

The Russian march is soft and slowA
Through dust and heat or slush and snowA
When the Russian skies hang grey and lowA
To the frontiers far where the Russians goA
And they march to night and they march to dayB
Like the grey wolves grey like the grey wolves greyB
Nor song nor sound their track revealsC
Save the ceaseless clock of the waggon wheelsC
But a rift in the mist shows a glint of sunD
On the long dark shape of a toiling gunD
And they strain by night and they drag by dayB
To a distant goal like the grey wolves greyB
-
As the horses toil at the ends of trainsE
And the ends of roads on the Blacksoil PlainsE
And Ivan digs in the frozen clayB
And he rolls the logs a bed to layB
For a gun that s five hundred miles awayB
But as sure to come as the grey wolves greyB
-
He is marching on with a purpose grandF
For brother Slav in another landF
Whose tongue perchance he cannot understandF
But he knows the cry from the far awayB
And he smells the blood like the grey wolves greyB
-
And Ivan s wife in her den at homeG
While hunger looms and his lean wolves comeH
With her grey black bread like the Darling mudI
And her tea bricks bound with the bullock s bloodI
She shields her cubs by night and dayB
Like the crouching sluts of the grey wolves greyB
-
And I march with Ivan where er he beJ
With the foreign blood that is strong in meJ
And the love and the hate that is fantasyJ
Like the ghosts of a father s memoryJ
With the blood that is strange to us to dayB
As the strange wild blood of the grey wolves greyB
Grey wolvesK
Grey wolvesK
The strange wild blood of the grey wolves greyB
