Grace Jennings Carmicheal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGFGF HIJIKLKL MIMINONO

I hate the pen the foolscap fairA
The poet s corner and the pageB
For Grief and Death are written thereA
In every land and every ageB
The poets sing and play their partsC
Their daring cheers their humour shinesD
But ah my friends their broken heartsC
Have writ in blood between the linesD
They fought to build a CommonwealthE
They write for women and for menF
They give their youth we give their healthE
And never prostitute the penF
Their work in other tongues is readG
And when sad years wear out the penF
Then they may seek their happy deadG
Or go and starve in exile thenF
-
A grudging meed of praise you giveH
Or your excuse the ready lieI
O God you don t know how they liveJ
O God you don t know how they dieI
The poetess whose gentle toneK
Oft cheered your mothers hearts when downL
A lonely woman fought aloneK
The bitter fight in London townL
-
Your rich to lilac lands resortM
And old world luxuries they buyI
You pour out gold to Cant and SportM
And give a million to a lieI
You give to cheats who rant and raveN
With eyes that glare and arms that whirlO
But not a penny that might saveN
The children of the Gippsland girlO
