Genoa Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBADED FGAGFHCH AIJIAKKK ALMLNDED OPQPRDED

A long farewell to GenoaA
That rises to the skiesB
Where the barren coast of ItalyC
Like our own coastline liesB
A sad farewell to GenoaA
And long my heart shall grieveD
The only city in the worldE
That I was loath to leaveD
-
No sign of rush or strife is thereF
No war of greed they wageG
The deep cool streets of GenoaA
Are rock like in their ageG
No garish signs of commerce thereF
Are flaunting in the sunH
A rag hung from a balconyC
Is by an artist doneH
-
And she was fair in GenoaA
And she was very kindI
Those pale blind seeming eyes that seemJ
Most beautifully blindI
Oh they are sad in GenoaA
Those poor soiled singing birdsK
I had but three Italian wordsK
And she three English wordsK
-
But love is cheap in GenoaA
Aye love and wine are cheapL
And neither leaves an aching headM
Nor cuts the heart too deepL
Save when the knife goes straight and thenN
There s little time to grieveD
The only city in the worldE
That I was loath to leaveD
-
I ve said farewell to tinted daysO
And glorious starry nightsP
I ve said farewell to Naples withQ
Her long straight lines of lightsP
But it is not for Naples butR
For Genoa that I grieveD
The only city in the worldE
That I was loath to leaveD
