Fall In, My Men, Fall In Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBADAD EFEFGDGD HIGIJDKD LMJMNDND ODODOPOP

The short hour's halt is endedA
The red gone from the westB
The broken wheel is mendedC
And the dead men laid to restB
Three days have we retreatedA
The brave old Curse and GrinD
Outnumbered and defeatedA
Fall in my men fall inD
-
Poor weary hungry sinnersE
Past caring and past fearF
The camp fires of the winnersE
Are gleaming in the rearF
Each day their front advancesG
Each day the same old dinD
But freedom holds the chancesG
Fall in my men fall inD
-
Despair's cold fingers searchesH
The sky is black aheadI
We leave in barns and churchesG
Our wounded and our deadI
Through cold and rain and darknessJ
And mire that clogs like sinD
In failure in its starknessK
Fall in my men fall inD
-
We go and know not whitherL
Nor see the tracks we goM
A horseman gaunt shall tell usJ
A rain veiled light shall showM
By wood and swamp and mountainN
The long dark hours beginD
Before our fresh wounds stiffenN
Fall in my men fall inD
-
With old wounds dully achingO
Fall in my men fall inD
See yonder starlight breakingO
Through rifts where storm clouds thinD
See yonder clear sky archingO
The distant range uponP
I'll plan while we are marchingO
Move on my men march onP
