The nearer camp fires lightedA
The distant beacons brightB
The horsemen on the skylineC
Are closing in to nightB
My brothers Oh my brothersD
Lie down and rest at lastE
The Years of ReparationF
Have rushed upon us fastE
-
Oh ride and ride you ridersD
Who rode ere I was bornG
While blink and blink the star dustH
That blinks before the mornG
And glow and glow you camp firesD
And flash you beacons brightB
They re riding round the wronged onesI
And riding round the rightB
-
My brothers Oh my brothersD
With dried and haggard eyesJ
In gaol for just blows strickenF
In gaol for women s liesJ
Lie down and pace no longerK
But bathe your eyes in tearsL
For Years of RetributionF
That shall be seven yearsM
-
Their lovers and believersD
Their sweethearts sisters wivesN
Their daughters sons and mothersD
The true friends of their livesO
Hold up your heads and firmlyP
Look down the Crooked SeersQ
For Years of JustifyingR
That shall be seven yearsM
-
Inventors artists poetsS
Exiled or driven madT
Sweated sneered at slanderedU
And driven to the badT
Take up the tools of geniusV
Freed from all paltry fearsM
For Seasons of RepaymentW
That shall be seven yearsM
-
Oh ride and ride you ridersD
That rode when I was bornG
Against a ghastly skylineC
Beneath a storm cloud tornG
I watched you through my childhoodX
I saw the whip and spurK
No spy s glass could detect youY
But I knew what you wereK
-
Oh ride and ride my ridersD
And flash my birth star brightB
The youth I never dreamed ofZ
Is with me here to nightB
The hearing strength and visionF
The will to do and dareA2
The love I ever longed forB2
Is round me everywhereA2
-
Dead Friendship ah Dead FriendshipC2
Rise up and breathe againD2
I ride my rounds re honouredB
Along the ranks of menD2
My old mates Oh my old matesE2
Who fought the cur and bruteB
My horsemen from the skylineC
Are drawn up to saluteB
-
My Dead Love Oh my Dead LoveZ
Who died for love of meP
Who sleeps amongst the poetsS
Since five years sobbed the seaP
Since five years blackened honourA2
And cramped and warped the penD2
There s glory to your spiritB
The laurel leafs againD2
-
My enemies the causelessP
Of vicious mysteriesP
Or mad with jealous madnessP
Or for the crawler s feesP
Fear ye my Cypher SevenF
For seven years to runF
The number set by HeavenF
When Heaven s will is doneF
-
So ride and ride my ridersP
And ride for men and meP
Ride close round madness yonderA2
And blackest treacheryP
Oh ride round little childrenF
That sleep through all and smileF2
At daybreak I will lead youY
Now I must rest awhileF2
