It was the King of VirlandA
he was angry thenB
That rode to crush rebellionC
With twenty thousand menB
His enemies he scatteredA
And hanged on every sideA
Because their creed was rapineB
Their cause was greed and prideA
-
They searched for Outlaw EricD
They hunted everywhereE
Most honest of the rebelsF
If aught was honest thereE
King Hertzberg swore to hang himG
But when the day was doneB
They had not found the OutlawH
But found his little sonB
-
He had not seen his fatherI
Nor knew where he had goneB
And someone asked him thoughtlessJ
Which side himself was onB
And straightway he made answerI
They found he answered trueK
'My father is a rebelL
And I'm a rebel too '-
-
King Hertzberg he dismountedA
And kindly bent his headA
'Now why are you a rebelL
My little man ' he saidA
The boy nor paused nor falteredA
But stood like Eric's sonB
And answered Hertzberg simplyM
'Because my father's one '-
-
And then they promised all thingsN
Dear to his heart I weenB
They promised they would make himG
The first page to the queenB
With princesses for playmatesO
But nay it would not doA
'My father is a rebelL
And I'm a rebel too '-
-
King Hertzberg sank beside himG
And rested on one kneeB
'I would my royal childrenB
As loyal were ' said heB
'Go seek and tell your fatherI
That he and his go freeB
And if his wrongs be realP
Then let him come to meB
-
'And let him come with plain wordsQ
With plain words in daylightA
And ride not with armed rebelsF
And outlaws in the nightA
And let him not misjudge meB
For to all that is untrueA
And wherever Wrong's the rulerI
I am a rebel tooA
