It was the King of Virland	A
he was angry then	B
That rode to crush rebellion	C
With twenty thousand men	B
His enemies he scattered	A
And hanged on every side	A
Because their creed was rapine	B
Their cause was greed and pride	A

They searched for Outlaw Eric	D
They hunted everywhere	E
Most honest of the rebels	F
If aught was honest there	E
King Hertzberg swore to hang him	G
But when the day was done	B
They had not found the Outlaw	H
But found his little son	B

He had not seen his father	I
Nor knew where he had gone	B
And someone asked him thoughtless	J
Which side himself was on	B
And straightway he made answer	I
They found he answered true	K
'My father is a rebel	L
And I'm a rebel too '	-

King Hertzberg he dismounted	A
And kindly bent his head	A
'Now why are you a rebel	L
My little man ' he said	A
The boy nor paused nor faltered	A
But stood like Eric's son	B
And answered Hertzberg simply	M
'Because my father's one '	-
	-
And then they promised all things	N
Dear to his heart I ween	B
They promised they would make him	G
The first page to the queen	B
With princesses for playmates	O
But nay it would not do	A
'My father is a rebel	L
And I'm a rebel too '	-

King Hertzberg sank beside him	G
And rested on one knee	B
'I would my royal children	B
As loyal were ' said he	B
'Go seek and tell your father	I
That he and his go free	B
And if his wrongs be real	P
Then let him come to me	B
	-
'And let him come with plain words	Q
With plain words in daylight	A
And ride not with armed rebels	F
And outlaws in the night	A
And let him not misjudge me	B
For to all that is untrue	A
And wherever Wrong's the ruler	I
I am a rebel too	A
