Beaten Back Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH EIEI JAJA GKGK

BEATEN back in sad dejectionA
After years of weary toilB
On that burning hot selectionA
Where the drought has gorged his spoilB
-
All in vain gainst him the vultureC
I have battled without restD
In the van of agricultureC
Marching out into the WestD
-
Now the eagle hawks are feedingE
On my perished stock that reekF
Where the water holes recedingE
Long had left the burning creekF
-
I must labour without pityG
I the pick and spade must wieldH
In the streetways of the cityG
Or upon another s fieldH
-
Can it be my reason s rockingE
For I feel a burning hateI
For the God who only mockingE
Sent the prayed for rain too lateI
-
Pour ye mocking rains and rattleJ
On the bare brown grassless plainA
On the shrivelled hides of cattleJ
That shall ne er want grass againA
-
Rush ye yellow floods to MurrayG
Over thirsty creek banks foamK
And o er all ye black clouds hurryG
Ye can bring not back my homeK
