BY RIGHT of birth in southern land I send my warning forthA
I see my country ruined by the wrongs that damned the NorthA
And shall I stand with fireless eyes and still and silent mouthB
While Mammon builds his Londons on the fair fields of the SouthB
-
CHORUSC
O must we hide our colourD
In fear of Mammon s spleenE
Or shall we wear the bonnie blueF
As Ireland wore the greenE
As Ireland wore the green my friendsG
As Ireland wore the greenE
Aye we will wear our colour stillH
As Ireland wore the greenE
-
I see the shade of poverty fall on each sunny sceneE
And slums and alley ways extend where fields were evergreenE
There is a law that stamps the flower of freedom as it springsI
And this upon a soil that s trod by prouder feet than kingsI
-
And must I hide my colourD
In fear of Mammon s spleenE
Or shall I wear the bonnie blueF
As Ireland wore the greenE
As Ireland wore the green my friendsG
As Ireland swore the greenE
Aye I will wear my colour yetJ
As Ireland wore the greenE
-
Out there beyond the lonely range our fathers toiled for yearsK
Neath all the hardships that beset true hearted pioneersK
And our brave mothers journeyed there to do the work of menL
On those great awful plains that were unfit for women thenL
-
Then must we hide our colourD
In fear of Mammon s spleenE
Or shall we wear the bonnie blueF
As Ireland swore the greenE
As Ireland wore the green my friendsG
As Ireland wore the greenE
Aye we shall wear our colour stillH
As Ireland wore the greenE
-
O shall the fields our fathers won be yielded to the fewF
Who never touched the axe or spade and hardships never knewF
Shall lordly robbers rule the land and build their mansions highM
And ladies flaunt their jewelled plumes where our brave mothers lieM
-
O must we hide our colourD
In fear of Mammnon s spleenE
Or shall the wear the bonnie blueF
As Ireland wore the greenE
As Ireland wore the green my friendsG
As Ireland wore the greenE
Aye the will wear our colour yetJ
As Ireland wore the greenE
-
What though our stalwart fathers came from every land on earthN
We will be loyal to the land that gives our children birthN
We ll show our banner to the sun the Southern Cross displayedO
And join our strength together for the home our fathers madeO
-
Let cowards hide their colourD
For fear of Mammon s spleenE
But I will wear my bonnie blueF
As Ireland swore the greenE
As Ireland swore the green my friendsG
As Ireland wore the greenE
Aye I will wear my colour stillH
As Ireland swore the greenE
-
We ll light the lamp of hope above the alley and the slumP
And teach the poor and drill them for the war that is to comeP
We ll send our songs recruiting far beneath the western skyM
And wake the towns and let them know the day of deeds is nighM
-
And the twill wear our colourD
In spite of Mammon s spleenE
O the will wear the bonnie blueF
As Ireland wore the greenE
As Ireland wore the green my friendsG
As Ireland wore the greenE
Aye the will wear our colour yetJ
As Ireland wore the greenE
