I MIND the days when ladies fairA
Helped on my overcoatB
And tucked the silken handkerchiefC
About my precious throatB
They used to see the poet s soulD
In every song I wroteB
-
They pleaded hard but I had workE
To do and could not stayF
I used to work the whole night throughG
And what have you to sayF
-
Twas clever handsome woman thenH
And I their rising starI
I could not see they worshipped meJ
Because I saw too farI
Tis well for one or two I thinkK
That things are as they areI
-
I used to write for writing s sakeL
I used to write till dayF
I loved my prose and poetryJ
And what have you to sayF
-
I guess if one should meet me nowM
That she would gasp to thinkK
She ever knew a thing like meJ
As down the street I slinkK
And trembling cadge from some old palN
The tray bit for a drinkK
-
I used to drink with gentlemenO
To pass an hour awayF
I drink long beers in common barsP
And what have you to sayF
-
But often in the darkest nightQ
And tis a wondrous thingK
When others see the devils danceR
I hear the angels singK
And round the drunkard s lonely bedS
Heaven s nurses whisperingK
-
I wrote for Truth and Right aloneT
I wrote from night till dayF
I ll find a drunken pauper graveU
And what have you to sayF
Good nightQ
Good dayF
My noble friendsV
And what have you to sayF
