Tis a yarn I heard of a new chum trapA
On the edge of the Never NeverB
Where the dead men lie and the black men lieC
And the bushman lies for everB
Twas the custom still with the local blacksD
To cadge in the altogetherB
They had less respect for our feelings thenE
And more respect for the weatherB
-
The trooper said to the sergeant s wifeF
Sure I wouldn t seem unpleasantG
But there s women and childer about the placeH
And barrin a lady s presentG
-
There s ould King Billy wid niver a stitchI
For a month may the drought cremate himJ
Bar the wan we put in his dirty headK
Where his old Queen Mary bate himJ
-
God give her strength and a peaceful reignL
Though she flies in a bit av a passionM
If ony wan hints that her shtoyle an luksN
Are a trifle behind the fashionM
-
There s two of the boys by the stable nowO
Be the powers I ll teach the varmintsN
To come wid nought but a shirt apieceN
And wid dirt for their nayther garmintsN
-
Howld on ye blaggards How dare ye dareP
To come widin sight av the housesN
I ll give ye a warnin all for wanceN
An a couple of ould pair of trousersN
-
They took the pants as a child a toyQ
The constable s words beguilingR
A smile of something beside their joyQ
And they took their departure smilingR
-
And that very day when the sun was lowS
Two blackfellows came to the stationM
They were filled with the courage of Queensland rumT
And bursting with indignationM
-
The constable noticed with growing ireU
They d apparently dressed in a hurryV
And their language that day I am sorry to sayN
Mostly consisted of plurryV
-
The constable heard and he wished himself backW
In the land of the bogs and the ditchesN
You plurry big tight britches p liceman what forV
You gibbit our missuses britchesN
-
And this was a case I am bound to confessN
Where civilisation went underV
Had one of the gins been less modest in dressN
He d never have made such a blunderV
-
And here let the moral be duly made knownX
And hereafter signed and attestedY
We should place more reliance on that which is shownX
And less upon what is suggestedZ
